MAX IV Laboratory continue with our annual practice aimed at motivating, empowering and connecting young researchers who will become our future scientists. Two awards have been established to recognize the outstanding work of young researchers, students and PhDs, whose research has been, fully or partially, performed at MAX IV Laboratory

DUO database We take the opportunity to acknowledge all PhD thesis and Master thesis that used the MAX IV facility on their research.
For statistics purposes MAX IV values that all PhD and Masters works that are a result of a beamtime at MAX IV, be uploaded in the MAX IV DUO system. This is something that can be done by the authors themselves in DUO using the link ‘Thesis report’ on the user home page.

MAX IV User Meeting Awards

The MAX IV Student Poster award was established in 2010. The award included a monetary prize, the equivalent of 5000 SEK and the opportunity to present the awarded work during the user meeting.  The award was sponsored  by SPECS. In 2020 this award became the MAX IV Students Science award 

The MAX IV PhD Thesis award was first established in 2013. The awardee is invited to give an oral presentation at the plenary session. The award consisted of a unique statuette created at MAX IV (the MAX-Lab Oscar). Since 2019 a monetary price, the equivalent of 5000 SEK, has became part of the award. In 2019, the special sponsorship from Dectris resulted in 8000 SEK for the awardee.

Four minutes clip

In 2020 we have foreseen, as part of the awards selection process, the possibility for the selected students and PhD award nominees to participate, with a 4 minutes clip of their research, alongside with the MAX IV groups+ clips and Q/A session on Monday 28 September.


Three questions

Furthermore, we aim to emphasize the crucial aspect of you researching your own research questions. With that in mind, the participation/registration form has a section with three text areas. We have formulated three questions pointing to different aspects which, we believe, are relevant not only for your career but ultimately for the future and purpose of MAX IV.

  1. Is there any aspect, for example technical, instrumental, methods theory background, etc, from which your research would greatly benefit of the MAX IV unique photon source properties such as high coherence, high flux, low emittance? (think ‘awe factor’)
  2. How would you describe is the potential impact of your research, whether direct or indirect, short or long term, specific science or global challenge?
  3. What would be the question that you think is most relevant to ask about your research at MAX IV and how would you answer it?


These are mandatory fields on the registration form with the aim of collecting some extra feedback from you, our community. We hope that this encourages you to share your educated or/and visionary thoughts and scientific plans and wishes for the future.

With whom will your comments would be share and how? With the user meeting participants and from the registration page. The details will be communicated to you in advance.

Would you need some more time to consider, reflect and maybe share your thoughts in another circle? That would also serve the purpose of this exercise.
