1) User Policies
Please visit our User Policies page and get acquainted with the MAX IV Terms and Condition for User Access.
2) Open Call?
MAX IV normally issues proposal calls two times per year:
Call opens in September for beamtime allocation for the Spring cycle, typically March – July.
Call opens in February for beamtime allocation for the Fall cycle, typically August – February.
To check if MAX IV has an open call for proposal and when the submission deadline is visit General User Access, call for proposals.
3) Beamline & Techniques
What Beamline and technique are you interested in? For an overview of all current capacities go to: Beamlines and techniques available for proposals. Just make sure that the your experimental plan and samples are compatible with the properties of the beamline and instrumentation. Further and more specific information can be found at each Beamline page. For the best chance of success, MAX IV advice that you always contact the Beamline Staff to discuss your proposed experiment before sending in a proposal.
4) Proposal type
Determine which proposal type would best suit your experiment. Further information about each proposal type can be found by following the links:

|BAG||Available in the research area “Structural Biology” for experiments at the BioMAX beamline. Applications accepted in the Fall Cycle calls, with submission deadline in March.|
Accepted BAG proposals are valid for four beamtime cycles (two years)
|Commissioning Experts||MAX IV from time to time welcome the submission of proposals, following special criteria, for scientific experiments that will help in the commissioning of new beamline capabilities.||Commissioning Experts Proposal Template|
|Fast Access||MAX IV offers access on short notice, for a limited amount of shifts, to experiments that require timely access to our facility||Fast Access Template|
|Normal||The standard proposal type available for all beamlines|
Normal proposals are valid for one beamtime cycle (6 months)
|Training & Education||Used for applications related to a university course, a training workshop or other activities benefitting from a training beamtime.||Training & Education Template.|

6) Collaboration Agreements
Check if you are eligible for support through one of the current Collaboration Agreements.
7) DUO login
Proposals, Scheduling and most experimental safety procedures at MAX IV are handled in a system called DUO. So to be able to submit a proposal you need need to set up an account, you can do so by clicking This link and follow the ” To create a new account, click here” button.
Please note that to be able to add Co:proposers, they too need a registered DUO account.
