Fast Access Proposals
Please be aware that Fast Access proposals falls under General User Access, and must hence follow the same Terms & Conditions, read more about this here: MAX IV Terms & Conditions
MAX IV offers access on short notice, for a limited amount of shifts, to experiments that require timely access to our facility. MAX IV have defined three use cases for Fast Access:
Sample feasibility
MAX IV aims to communicate a decision within three weeks of proposal submission but response times may vary due to national holidays, machine shutdown periods etc.
- Preliminary experiments to assess technical feasibility or to verify sample preparation, mainly to be used as a pre-study for a ‘Normal proposal’ (General User Access).
- Handled on a first come first served basis.
- This proposal type does not necessarily grant you access to the MAX IV facility, it is up to beamline staff to decide if this should be handled by mail in, remote or on site.
Scientific experiment
MAX IV aims to communicate a decision within three weeks of proposal submission and offer a scheduling opportunity within six weeks. Response times and scheduling possibilities may vary due to national holidays, machine shutdown periods etc.
- Short, time-critical experiments which cannot wait until the next Call for proposals opens. Please note that this reason must be well articulated in the proposal.
- The scientific case is evaluated by a member of the relevant Programme Advisory Committee (PAC).
- This proposal type does not necessarily grant you access to the MAX IV facility, it is up to beamline staff to decide if should be handled by mail in, remote or on site.
Standard Measurement Service
MAX IV offer fast access for a set of predefined standard measurements, please see each available beamlines “Fast Access” page for further information.
MAX IV aims to communicate a decision within three weeks of proposal submission but response times may vary due to national holidays, machine shutdown periods etc.
- A set of similar samples with a scope too small for a normal proposal.
- Handled on a first come first served basis.
- This proposal type does not grant you access to the MAX IV facility, samples are to be handled by mail in.
Currently available Beamlines
Fast Access might be available under different conditions at different beamlines, for specifications please visit the beamline site.It is recommended that you always contact your beamline of interest for further discussions before sending in your proposal.

SARS-CoV-2 related research:
In order to support science towards understanding the SARS-CoV-2 virus, MAX IV offers its instrumentation and beamtime to facilitate efforts to discover more about the virus and bring us closer to an effective vaccine, diagnostics or treatment.
If you wish to apply for projects directly related to SARS-CoV-2, kindly contact the User Office at .
How to submit a Fast Access proposal in DUO
- Make sure there is an open proposal call accepting Fast Access proposals.
- Choose Proposal Type Fast Access
- Choose Research Area according to your beamline of interest (see table below)
- Use the Fast Access Template.
Please note that one Beamline/Lab can have multiple Research Areas.
Research Area | Beamline / Labs |
---|---|
Commissioning | N/A |
Chemistry | Balder |
Material Science with hard X-rays | DanMAX |
Nano Science | NanoMAX |
Soft Matter | CoSAXS |
Spectroscopy | Bloch FinEstBeAMS FlexPES HIPPIE MAXPEEM SoftiMAX SPECIES SPM-lab Veritas |
Structural Biology | BioMAX CoSAXS |
Ultrafast Science | FemtoMAX |
Please make sure to always upload all publications resulting from experiments at MAX IV to the DUO Publication Database and to link them to the relevant proposal ID and Beamline. And don’t forget the mandatory acknowledgement for MAX IV and staff.
